The Shaler Township refuse / recycling and green waste contract was recently bid as the current contract expires as of December 31, 2013.  There were two bidders for this service, Allied/Republic Services and Waste Management.

The current contract holder is Allied/Republic Services.  For 2013 Shaler Township residents pay $18.46 per month for refuse/recycling and green waste services.

Household Hazadous Waste and Electronic Waste: Starting in 2014 the Township has awarded an additional service to the successful bidder.  This additional service will allow for the disposal of household hazaroudous waste (including paint products, pesticides, etc.)  The current law stipulates that electronics (which are TV's, computers, monitors, and similar electronic waste) cannot be combined with regular trash collections.  This option will allow residents to include electronics recycling with their regular collection.

The cost of this additional service will be $1.00 per month.  The Township has elected to include this service in the contract to provide residents with an alternative for hard-to-dispose of materials for a minimal monthly cost.

With the addition of this new service, the combined price of $17.95 is $ .51 per month lower than the 2013 contract price.  Senior Citizens 65 years of age and older will receive a 20% discount on this price. If you are a senior (age 65 or older) and your invoice does not reflect the senior rate, you may bring proper identification into the Township office to register for the reduced rate.

"Extended Travel" Billing Waiver Request Clause - Six month time period only
Customers who temporarily leave their permanent residence for more than 30 days in the Township shall be permitted by the Contractor to cancel service temporarily for a period not to exceed six (6) months. Requests for this exception must be made to the Township or to the Contractor at least 10 days prior to the requested date to stop service.

Republic Services conducts service operations on a three-day a week schedule.  Please refer to the street listing to find out what day the contractor will pick up your trash and recycling  Place your trash and recycling out by the curb weekly for collection the night before your designated collection day.    If you are a senior (age 65 or older) and your invoice does not reflect the senior rate, you may bring proper identification into the Township office to register for the reduced rate.

Garbage Service:

  • Republic Services provides curbside collection of unlimited household waste. This includes normal household waste, yard waste, furniture, bundled carpet cut in 4-ft. lengths and appliances (freon must be removed by a certified plumber).  Please when disposing of bulk items, put out only 1 per week.  For disposal of construction, demolition or remodeling material, please contact Republic for disposal rental information.

 Service Restrictions:

  • Due to state and local regulations, the following materials are prohibited from collection; automotive, batteries, tires, wet paint, chemicals, liquids, and hazardous waste such as asbestos, gasoline, or oil.  Appliances with refrigerants (freon) may only be collected if a sticker is placed on the applicance certifying the refrigerants have been removed. 
  • Brush, branches, or tree limbs may not exceed 4 inches in diameter.  Material must be bundled not to exceed 4 feet in length and no more than 8 inches in diameter.  Please containerize your rubbish in standard 32-gallon trash containers or heavy plastic bags securely tied.  Bags and / or cans may not exceed 50 pounds.
  • Paint will be picked up only after the lid has been removed and the paint has been absorbed by shredded newspaper, kitty litter or old mulch. When the can is dried, leave the lid off and include the can with your weekly pickup.  No wet paint will be accepted.
  • Needles can be disposed of in the weekly trash provided they are in a container such as a plastic milk carton or empty coffee can.  All containers should be sealed with tape so the needles cannot fall out. 

 

Holiday Schedule:

  • There is no trash collection on the following six holidays.**
  • **Pick up will be delayed one day if the official holiday is on a Monday through Friday.
  • If the holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday there is no change in service day for that week.
