Gypsy Moth density has inceased within the surveyed areas of Shaler Township. The average egg mass density for the entire managed area of Shaler Township has increased from undetectable levels in 2011, to an average of 8 egg masses per acre (EMA) that will hatch in the spring of 2012. This represents the highest EMA recorded within the Township since 2005. While this growth is significant, the real concern for Shaler Township and Allegheny County is related to increasing population outbreaks in the next few years due to the potential cyclic nature of this pest. In the past, several years of relatively low level infestations has been followed by an outbreak infestation. In addition, low pest populations over the past several years have reduced the abundance and influence of gypsy moth specific natural enemies.
The release of the gypsy moth specific fungus, Entomophaga maimaiga is recommended in the spring of 2012 to reduce the potential of defoliation, tree mortality, and nuisance associated with caterpillars and their excrement. The fungus is a key factor in the regulation of the pest. The risk assessment survey program should be continued to track the infestation and develop recommendations for management.
